Meridian is underwater. It is glowing anyway.
Thirty years after the Great Flood, the coastal city of Meridian sits eighty percent below the sea. People live in the tower tops above the waterline, connected only by what lies beneath. You are Kai, a dolphin who grew up between high-rise canyons and neon signage, partner to a small salvage drone called Lumen. Between you, you are what keeps the city running: couriers, rescuers, whisperers to a broken power grid.
Tonight the tidal plant went down. Four distribution nodes are dead. And somewhere in the harbour basin a thirty-year-old port AI is still stubbornly running its last evacuation protocol.
SWIMMING THAT FEELS GOOD
Kai is not played back, he is computed: a fourteen-link spine that bends into every turn and stretches on every push. Wide arcs instead of hard angles, gliding instead of stopping. Pull upward with real speed, commit at the right moment, and he leaps clear of the water in a long arc.
ECHO INSTEAD OF A MINIMAP
One press sends a ring through the water that traces every contour it crosses and keeps glowing for seconds afterwards. Hold to open the frequency wheel: Low passes through walls and reveals cavities. Mid talks to the city's machinery and opens resonance locks. High shatters safety glass. In the lightless subway arteries your echo is your only eye.
LUMEN
Your drone has hands and you do not. She turns valves, lifts cargo and opens hatches. And when nothing is in reach, she climbs and lights the entire room for ten seconds.
THE CITY AS A MACHINE
Currents running through old pump shafts can be rerouted at valve wheels: ride them as a shortcut, or turn them so a turbine moves. At sluice consoles you shift the water level through three stages and open routes that were not there a moment ago.
FOUR DISTRICTS, ONE EVENING
Market canyons in evening gold. Administrative towers in noon haze. The lightless subway arteries. The power basin at dawn. Twenty-five jobs: deliveries, rescues, repairs, surveys and time trials with medals, plus 24 datacores carrying small voices from before the flood.
FAIR, NOT HARSH
Generous checkpoints behind every hazard. No lives counter, no lost progress. Run out of air and you lose hearts slowly rather than dying on the spot. Nothing in Meridian wants to hurt you, the city has simply gone indifferent: security drones are stunned for seconds, never destroyed, and no living creature is ever harmed. Sessions of five to twenty minutes.
THE GAME EXPLAINS ITSELF
Short prompts the first time something matters, gone the moment you do the thing. A trainer mode where you tap anything in the water and learn what it is and why it is there. And a legend covering every symbol in the city.
